In 1858, two British soldiers, Captain Robert Stewart and Major General Joe Shearer, who were instrumental in establishing this Polo Club in 1862, had witnessed this game similar to polo known as “Sagol Kangjei” being played by locals in Silchar, Manipur.

Both officers were so captivated by the experience that they quickly introduced the sport to their peers in the same organized format of play, which was introduced here. Over the subsequent decades, Polo spread throughout England, and is now played professionally in more than 70 countries.

 THE WARMTH

Located in the centre of the race course with its rich heritage, Calcutta Polo Club (CPC) continues to pride itself for its warm and friendly atmosphere whilst offering a world-class riding and polo facility to its members and guests. The Polo Grounds, namely, the Pat Williamson Ground offers a breathtaking view of the Victoria Memorial and Vidyasagar Setu.

Founded a century and half back, the Club perhaps best embodies the paradox of Polo in modern India. Far removed from the glitz and glamour like in other metros, the Oldest Polo Club is working towards regaining its glorious past.

Calcutta Polo Club was once the “POLO HUB” for several members of the Royal families and top most players had their kiss of success with the Club’s most Prestigious Cups such as-

  • The Ezra Cup, 1880 – The Oldest Polo Trophy in the World
  • The Carmichael Cup, 1910
  • The Stewarts Cup

These cups are still being played and names of the Players of the winning team is engraved on the cup as a practice since decades in memory.

  ROLLING TIMES

Until a few years ago, the Club was almost about to loose the Title of being “The Oldest Polo Club in the World” when it had almost gone into hibernation and become defunct. But soon, Mr. Keshaav Bangur was brought in as a white knight to give fresh life to Polo in Calcutta. His personal affection and commitment for the sport, has changed the ways totally and the “Ball is in full Roll” once again.

  EVIDENT

One can now get to see, the Polo Stables, the Horses getting trained, the Riding Arena, new & young members who wish to participate in the local and national tournaments getting prepared in the Club’s Clinics. The President’s guidance has made the way out, right from improving the infrastructure, upgrading the quality of the match grounds, rebuilding the stabling facilities, buying and training horses, and putting together a professional team to conduct lessons at the club, all is back to track.

  THE COME BACK

After almost a decade, the Calcutta Polo Club was once again in its full swing to host a 2-week polo tournament - The “BFL Corporation Polo Season” in December 2006.
The Tournament in Calcutta attracted Maharani Gayatri Devi (Queen of Jaipur), Cine Celebrities from both Bollywood & Tollywood apart from other distinguished guests from the corporate, social and entertainment world. The season was a big success for the Calcutta Polo Club which welcomed teams including members of the Indian national team selected to play at the Polo World Cup 2007 in New Zealand.

  OUR FOCUS …. NOW

A. To create an interest and appreciation for this ancient sport.
B. To encourage and promote new talented polo players.

With several polo fans attending the polo matches and new members joining the Club every month to learn riding and polo, the Calcutta Polo Club is encouraged and optimistic about the future. Perhaps, it is matter of time when polo will return to its birthplace and Calcutta Polo Club will succeed once again in becoming the principal hub of polo.
… and YES … Polo has caught on well amongst the young stars of the City of Joy.
